Jean Ferrat Essentials

Hidden by Communist members of the French Resistance during World War II, the left-wing patriot Jean Ferrat stuck to his political guns over a half-century career. Alongside the lyrical love songs he delivered in his full, open voice, Ferrat, a Jew, sang about the Holocaust, lauded Castro and saluted Communism in a song banned by French TV. No matter the topic, he commanded a presence as big as the country he loved—and loved to scold.
