Jawbox Essentials

Formed in 1989, post-hardcore heroes Jawbox were part of Washington D.C.'s thriving underground punk scene. The band's first two albums, 1991's Grippe and 1992's Novelty, had the angular riffs and ferocious attack that would define ‘90s post-hardcore—but also a surprising melodic sense. After signing to a major label for their third album, 1994's For Your Own Special Sweetheart, Jawbox grew tougher and darker. Despite developing a fervent cult following at the height of the ‘90s alt-rock boom, the group disbanded following their self-titled 1996 album.
