France Gall Essentials

France Gall received her first radio airplay as a present for her 16th birthday, and before she turned 20, she'd already won Eurovision with her performance of the winking Serge Gainsbourg chanson "Poupée de cire, poupée de son". Her airy, conversational voice remained constant as she shifted through styles and languages—elliptical psych, swinging disco, homages to Ella Fitzgerald—until her 1997 retirement, which she commemorated with concerts that showcased her most indelible hits.
