Upon busting out of Toronto in the mid-’00s, Born Ruffians lived up to their name with a style of indie rock that was minimalist in design yet manic in execution. On early tracks like “This Sentence Will Ruin/Save Your Life”, they hop and howl like a younger, sugar-buzzed Modest Mouse set loose in a trampoline park. Since then, they’ve acquired more patience and poise (see: the soulful strut of “Needle” or the angelic acoustic anthem “Forget Me”), but the infectious exuberance remains. Their 2020 single “I Fall in Love Every Night” answers its dramatic, drum-rolled surges with joyous blasts of Clarence Clemons-worthy sax.
