Asleep At The Wheel Essentials

Asleep at the Wheel may be the best Texas country band ever to come out of West Virginia. Formed in 1969 in the town of Paw Paw, the group would become one of the biggest Western swing outfits of the second half of the 20th century, bringing their double-fiddle sound to country radio with "The Letter That Johnny Walker Read", a swaying ballad as funny as it is moving. They show their range on tracks like "Choo Choo Ch'boogie", a Louis Jordan cover filled with dance rhythms and bent notes, and they even add horns to "Hesitation Blues", which features vocals from Willie Nelson, the man who finally convinced them to move to Austin.
