Melchior Hoffmann

About Melchior Hoffmann

Dresden was the first musical home of Hoffmann who was a choirboy in the royal chapel. He matriculated at the university of Leipzig and succeeded Telemann as the director of The New Church. As a conductor he increased the members of the musical college to forty musicians, and, raised the standard of the opera. Apparently Hoffmann composed numerous delightful operas but only two titles are known: "Acontius und Cydippe," and "Rhea Sylvia." He also composed sacred music in the form of cantatas, a magnificat and a mass. ~ Keith Johnson
