About Diane Hildebrand

Singer-songwriter Diane Hildebrand, who released an album for Elektra in 1969, may be best known for having co-written "Early Morning Blues and Greens," covered by the Monkees on their 1967 album Headquarters. Having your song covered as a Monkees' LP track is nothing to be ashamed of, but neither is it something you want to bill as your career highlight. Her album confirmed her status as a minor singer/songwriter, her thin voice delivering average material that had nothing to make her stand out in a crowded field. If there is any point of reference among other performers of her time, it is low-key pop-folk-rock, with sympathetic full production that bears a little (although not a great deal of) similarity to Linda Ronstadt's early folk-rock days. The differences are that Hildebrand wrote or co-wrote all her songs, but also that Ronstadt's early Stone Poneys and solo records were much better. ~ Richie Unterberger
