About Broderick Smith

b. 17 February 1948, England. With his no-nonsense approach and solid, distinctive voice, Broderick Smith was of the most unpretentious lead singers in Australia. Honing his skills via the blues and R&B bands early in his career (Adderley Smith Blues Band, Sundown, and Carson), it was with the Dingoes (1973-1979) that Smith found a vehicle toward national acclaim. His solo albums gave some insight into his talent, but he never acquired the fame he deserved. Following on from the demise of the Dingoes, he led a series of different bands, the Hired Hand, the Big Combo, Doors of Perception and the Noveltones. All featured excellent musicians, and his own harmonica playing ensured that his name stayed in the gig guides for the Melbourne pub-rock scene. Unfortunately, his excellent blues/soul voice remained unrecognized in the mass market. Smith died on April 30, 2023, at the age of 75.
