The fifth in Deutsche Grammophon’s run of seven Mozart operas, this recording of Clemenza di Tito bursts with talent, including Joyce DiDonato as Sesto, Marina Rebeka as Vitellia, Tara Erraught as Annio and, as Tito himself, Rolando Villazón. The composer’s last opera, a tale of love, friendship, revenge and ultimate forgiveness, is packed with gorgeous arias, in particular DiDonato’s “Parto, ma tu ben mio”, shared with the most velvet of clarinet solos. The recitatives throughout are brilliantly executed, both by this legendary vocal lineup and also by the Chamber Orchestra of Europe’s fine fortepianist, alert to every subtle dramatic detail.
