Omar Apollo is most comfortable in love’s greatest discomforts—at least that’s what fuels his punchy electro-soul. The Indiana native started out with a six-string and a laptop, wrapping languid guitar lines around rubbery beats and exposing his heartbreak through fragile, rippling croons. After gaining traction with songs like the retro-soul gem “Ugotme”, Apollo set to work on his 2018 debut EP, Stereo, a bilingual collection in which he raps (“Hijo De Su Madre”) as coolly as he flips on his falsetto (“Erase”). His next EP, 2019’s Friends, proved even funkier, with the singer embracing a penchant for Prince and psychedelia.
