Zara Larsson: Music That Moves Me

The end—that’s Zara Larsson’s favourite part of a workout. “When it’s over, I feel so accomplished,” she tells Apple Music. “I don’t necessarily find working out fun but I love the benefits for my mental health and sleep. Sometimes, hard things aren’t fun and that’s OK. I love dancing too because it doesn’t feel like a workout but it definitely is. If you can find a class that makes you forget that it is hard, I find you have an easier time committing to it.” For that reason, music is a very important part of the Swedish singer-songwriter’s fitness routine. “It takes my mind off what I’m doing, it’s motivational and gives me a beat to move to,” she says. “My trainer actually only plays reggae which is a nice vibe. When I work out by myself, I like a good tempo. I like a catchy song to move to. Nothing too hardcore, nothing too techno. I like to be able to sing along and feel like the songs are my friends and we’re pushing through together.” That philosophy is reflected in Larsson’s choices for this Music That Moves Me playlist, with the star selecting melodic movers from Beyoncé, Jungle, Peggy Gou, Victoria Monét and plenty more. She hopes you’ll find them inspiring enough to commit to three important words that are key to starting any workout. “Just do it!” says Larsson. “Get it over with. It’s nice to have a workout knocked out in the morning because you’ll feel so accomplished for the rest of the day. Also, don’t be so hard on yourself in the beginning. Just show up and get into the routine and, of course, find a workout you enjoy. Not everyone loves lifting weights or running. I do a lot of functional training which means that I use a lot of my own body weight to tone and build muscle. It’s definitely Pilates-inspired and I feel like it’s really good for maintenance. I’m not a big runner and prefer to do a whole workout on a yoga mat.”
