Yumi Zouma Essentials

Yumi Zouma's music may be woozy, chillwave-indebted dream-pop, but the circumstances leading up to their 2014 debut EP were anything but chilled. When a violent earthquake devastated their home city of Christchurch in 2011, one member of the quartet split to France and another to America, leaving songs such as “A Long Walk Home For Parted Lovers” and “The Brae” (the name of the street where they used to live before the earthquake) to be recorded by swapping ideas online, contributing to the detached, nocturnal feel of the disco-dusted material. That mood still resonated through 2016's Yoncalla LP, but the fact they recorded it together while touring also allowed a more confident synth-pop sound to emerge on the likes of “Short Truth”.
