Yothu Yindi was as much of an Australian cultural phenomenon as they were a pop-music oddity. A collective of indigenous artists—who occasionally collaborated with the likes of Paul Kelly, Peter Garrett and Neil Finn—they were initially introduced to an international mainstream audience with the surprise dance remix of their song “Treaty” in 1991. The bandleader and singer, Mandawuy Yunupingu, was also a leader of his community. He was the first aboriginal person in the Northern Territory to graduate from university, and was named Australian of the Year in 1992. Trace the trajectory of one of the most interesting dance-floor regulars of the early '90s.
