War earned a reputation in the early ‘70s for playfully eccentric, Latin-flavoured funk hits, but they could also simmer down into soulful serenades like “So”, a post-breakup lament whose aching harmonica lines conjure the sensation of falling tears. But when they're not mending broken hearts, they're getting out of their heads: “Gypsy Man” rolls gospel vocals, samba grooves and psychedelic haze into a trance-inducing 11-minute odyssey.
