Vance Joy Essentials

It takes a special kind of artist to write a global pop smash on ukulele, but such was the feat of Melbourne born James Keogh–aka Vance Joy–with 2013 single “Riptide”, which matched highly relatable lyrics (“I was scared of dentists and the dark”) and pop culture references with an infectious melody and Mumford & Sons-esque folk stomp. The fact that it first appeared on his debut EP, God Loves You When You're Dancing, alongside the more dynamic and expansive “Emmylou” speaks of an artist arriving fully formed. 2014's Dream Your Life Away and 2018's Nation of Two reinforced that notion, Keogh's everyman sentiment, simple hooks and heartfelt falsetto lending the romantic storytelling of “Georgia” and upbeat, horn-laden “Lay It On Me” an engaging, familiar touch.
