More than a classic-rock powerhouse, Ireland's brooding conduit of mystical R&B takes listeners along on deep inner journeys. The improvised jazz cadences of "Cyprus Avenue" and "Listen to the Lion" led Morrison to the later R&B transcendence of "Dweller On the Threshold", which he sings as though Ray Charles awaited him on the other side.
