UB40 Essentials

Only the '80s could have produced a multi-ethnic British reggae band that used dulcet keys and ska-style guitar to turn classics like "I Got You Babe" and "Red Red Wine" completely upside down. Led by Ali Campbell, a singer with a trembling, melancholic voice, UB40 made almost every tune they touched sound lilting and sweet—including those they wrote themselves. With the appropriately named "Sing Our Own Song", for instance, they penned a tribute to the anti-apartheid rebels in South Africa, bigging-up self-determination over a long groove that bounces synth melodies off a buoyant bassline.
