Over the past couple of decades, art-minded metal bands have taken the oceanic blur of shoegaze and post-rock and given it way more density and volume. The atmospheric, super-extended “post-metal” that resulted comes from all over: Boston (genre originators Isis), San Francisco (Deafheaven), Chicago (Pelican, Russian Circles), even France (Alcest).
