The Pharcyde Essentials

Based in Los Angeles, The Pharcyde started out as a bunch of dancers before honing their talents as rappers. 1992's studio debut Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde presented the crew's breezy vibe as they dropped relatable and often self-deprecating raps over beats mined from jazz and funk sample sources. Their follow-up album, 1995's Labcabincalifornia, included production input from J Dilla, while a quirky Spike Jonze-directed video for “Drop”—which featured the group seeming to rhyme their lyrics backwards—scored them a cult hit.
