The Herd Essentials

The Herd Essentials

Hip-hop rhymes with fish'n'chip shop in the Herd's distinctively Australian vernacular but that's about as easy as the home truths get over a decade of hard-nosed scrutiny of the modern nation's mixed fortunes. The multi-cultural fabric of the Sydney collective brought extra gravity to up-front discussion of racism, social inequity and corporate irresponsibility when Ozi Batla, Urthboy and Berzerkatron began bouncing terse rhymes off a trampoline of beats and live elements in 2001. The proud fringe dwellers inched closer with their potent take on Redgum's anti-war song I Was Only Nineteen in '05. Three years on, Summerland raided the ARIA Top 10 and the urban end of the AIR Awards.
