Tha Dogg Pound Essentials

Tha Dogg Pound Essentials

When Dr. Dre assembled a cadre of the most talented young rappers and producers on the West Coast to work on his renowned 1992 debut album, The Chronic, little did he know that he’d be introducing two artists who would go on to form one of Los Angeles County’s most iconic duos. But when Kurupt, a transplant to South L.A. by way of Philadelphia, met Daz Dillinger, a Long Beach native and cousin of Snoop Dogg’s, and formed Tha Dogg Pound, the results would echo far beyond the sessions for a single album. Beginning with their work on The Chronic and Snoop’s Doggystyle—and in earnest with their own landmark debut, 1995’s Dogg Food, which debuted atop the Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum in less than three months—the pair made West Coast rap smoother and more serrated, a playful tension coursing through coy coastal taunts like “New York, New York” and the delirious “What Would U Do?” alike.
