Sylvester took the free-love thrill ride of disco into the future as the genre morphed into Hi-NRG in the early ‘80s, and the thumping “Menergy” was the pinnacle of that salacious, synth-driven sound. But Sylvester also had roots in gospel, funk and soul; he adds a rubbery pop to Herbie Hancock's “Magic Number”, and his trembling voice makes the soulful balladry of “Can't Forget the Love” all the more poignant.
