Formed in 1976, Vic Godard's first band, Subway Sect, cut some of the great early punk singles—but Godard put together a whole new Subway Sect in 1980. Their D.I.Y. mix of Northern soul, rockabilly and Rat Pack crooning went nowhere commercially but found Godard championed by post-punks and early indie-pop bands. Godard disbanded Subway Sect in 1985 to become a postman, but has released a string of idiosyncratic albums at unpredictable intervals right into the 21st century, both solo and as The Subway Sect, filtering everything from jazz to electronica through his unique worldview.
