Before they became alt-rock's foremost guitarchitects, Sonic Youth were among many early-‘80s acts experimenting with a post-punk mix of disco and dissonance (the latter of which is supplied by a power drill on the bass-grooved workout “The Burning Spear”). But even their most totemic indie-rock epics were built with unlikely materials—the seven-minute Daydream Nation standout “'Cross the Breeze” douses its hardcore fuse in Texan grease.
