The old-fashioned Aussie country-and-western star Smoky Dawson never quit—he still ambled onstage in a 10-gallon hat right up to his passing in 2008, at the age 95. Starting out in the Great Depression of the '30s and basing his act on the American cowboy radio stars of the era, Smoky's music went hand-in-hand with a stellar broadcasting career. His national radio shows and constant tours were a common touchtone for generations of listerers. Playing town halls, rodeos and concert halls for fans of all ages, the "Happy-Go-Lucky Cowhand" became one of the most famous Australians of the mid-20th century.
