When a trio of 12-year-olds started a band in Newcastle in 1992, few would've guessed Oz rock history was being made. But by 1994, Silverchair were already Australia's Next Big Things, their grungy 1995 debut Frogstomp and 1997's stadium-sized Freak Show making them stars at home and abroad. But frontman Daniel Johns kept pushing The Chair into new directions, 1999's Neon Ballroom introducing electronic flourishes and orchestral overtures. After going on hiatus following 2002's Diorama, the band returned in style with 2007's Young Modern, a swaggering, glam-tinged effort that boasted the #1 single, “Straight Lines”. It proved a fitting swan song, with Silverchair finally calling it quits in 2011 after two decades together, their career including a staggering 21 ARIA wins and 15 songs in the Hottest 100.
