Although best known as a soprano saxophonist, jazz's first great soloist began on clarinet. Bechet blows the licorice stick with trumpet-like authority on Trixie Smith's "Freight Train Blues", but he frequently employs both instruments for different choruses in a single track, as in the confidently swinging "Shake It and Break It". The aptly titled "Runnin' Wild", though, captures his soprano prowess in full effect.
