Selects: SBTRKT

Selects is a biweekly playlist in which DJs and producers showcase their favourite tracks of any given moment. For this edition, UK electronic producer SBTRKT, aka Aaron Jerome, bridges key tunes old and new. Here’s what he tells Apple Music about his picks. “I’ve created a playlist that both bridges music I grew up listening to and music I’ve been more recently playing. I’m someone who doesn’t really let go of tracks—and once I find something, I play it for the long haul. Much of my musical influence comes from specific songs—and the feeling they create—and the nuance of key changes or instrument texture. I’ve never been too focused on one specific era or genre of music, as I’ve been focused on the feeling. I grew up on tracks like 2Pac, ‘Heaven Ain’t Hard 2 Find’, and Bucketheads, ‘The Bomb’. I had no idea at the time that these tracks incorporated samples, so everything was a new discovery—like it landed from another planet. A lot of my favourite music now too continues to incorporate samples, like Tyler [The Creator]’s ‘BEST INTEREST’—something I’ve not put down since I first heard it. I’ve been reluctant to follow that path with my own music, because I had spent so much time trying to create things from scratch and I didn’t know how to otherwise. Tracks like the opener by Cash Cobain are super inspiring to me in how a track can live a whole other way if you change the context/speed. André 3000’s verse on ‘Life of the Party’ is my favourite vocal recording of the past couple of years. And Tim Reaper’s ‘Pull Up’ remix encapsulates everything I love about jungle.” —SBTRKT
