It says a lot about Rowland S. Howard that he collaborated with Nick Cave for years but always commanded as much attention as that famous frontman. After the pair's wild-eyed early band The Birthday Party dissolved, the lanky Melbourne guitarist went on to create spooky alt-rock ballads with Lydia Lunch, Nikki Sudden, Magic Dirt and HTRK, as well as perfecting his ageless voice and otherworldly guitar sound on two solo albums. His eerie signature song “Shivers” has been covered by everyone from Divine Fits to Courtney Barnett and, since his death in 2009, Howard lives on as a mysterious cult hero.
