REMI Essentials

Melbourne rapper Remi Kolawole and drummer/producer Sensible J comprise REMI, whose 2014 debut album Raw X Infinity became the first hip-hop record to win the Australian Music Prize. Between Kolawole’s sly wordplay and unflustered flow and Sensible J’s jazz-, funk- and soul-inspired grooves, the duo evoke acts like Mos Def and A Tribe Called Quest. This is conscious rap that feels very current: “For Good”, featuring Sampa the Great, is about being ghosted on social media, while “5 A.M.” unpacks the lingering trauma of a toxic relationship through gripping staccato.
