Prestige Records: The '60s

Prestige Records: The '60s

Apple Music

Prestige Records' landmark artists—John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk—had all moved on by the early '60s. Owner Bob Weinstock took that as a cue to diversify, as the label moved to the avant-garde (Eric Dolphy), global fusion (Yusef Lateef), blues (Jimmy Witherspoon), soul jazz (Gene Ammons) and more. The new signings kept Prestige vital until it was sold in 1971.
