Case in point: Lambert, the Sardinian-mask-wearing crossover classical composer whose minimalist, arrestingly lyrical works have made an international splash. The repetitive structures and melancholy moods of this German artist’s 2015 breakthrough Stay In the Dark were reminiscent of Philip Glass and Aphex Twin, while 2016’s Lost Tapes found the composer looking into his more whimsical, buoyant side. The jazzy chords and improvisational melodies of 2019’s True made him one of his generation’s vital classical voices.
