Pinback formed in San Diego in 1998, at a time when peers like Modest Mouse and Built to Spill were emerging with a similarly anxious, fidgety take on indie rock. Though Rob Crow and Armistead Burwell Smith IV's project wouldn't achieve the same degree of national renown as those bands, they amassed a devout cult following that would sustain the band through an increasingly sporadic five-album discography (and a constellation of beloved affiliated acts like Heavy Vegetable, Three Mile Pilot and Thingy).
