Pinback Essentials

Pinback formed in San Diego in 1998, at a time when peers like Modest Mouse and Built to Spill were emerging with a similarly anxious, fidgety take on indie rock. Though Rob Crow and Armistead Burwell Smith IV's project wouldn't achieve the same degree of national renown as those bands, they amassed a devout cult following that would sustain the band through an increasingly sporadic five-album discography (and a constellation of beloved affiliated acts like Heavy Vegetable, Three Mile Pilot and Thingy). With Crow announcing his retirement from music in 2015 to focus on family life, let this playlist serve as a career-capping retrospective for one of American indie rock's most adorably idiosyncratic bands.
