He's a master storyteller and sometime taxi driver who writes tough but tender tales about those on the margins of society. Keyes' debut, 2005's Meter, was wiry rock and gritty acoustica populated with characters living lives of quiet desperation. Follow-up The Last Ghost Train Home contained “The Day John Sattler Broke His Jaw”, his enduring piece of rousing rock about the 1970 rugby league grand final. Keyes continues to mine the world where he grew up tough, with 2015's Sunnyholt introducing horns to his sound and detailing the displacement of Sydney's working class to suburban wastelands.
