Perfume Genius Essentials

Honesty and intimacy are the twin poles of Perfume Genius' inventive and arresting bedroom pop. Staring down the homophobic ghosts of his adolescence (“Learning”) and standing up for his own truth (“Queen”), the Seattle musician confronts trauma and self-worth with haunting candour. On 2014's “Grid”, his unconventional approach yields strange, echo-soaked synth-pop touched up with rockabilly and playground chants, but he's just as good at sweet simplicity: From 2016, the slowcore-tinged “To Lay Me Down”, with Sharon Van Etten, looks to classic Americana with almost spiritual devotion.
