Om Essentials

Om Essentials

A spin-off from doom legends Sleep, Om deliver stoner metal with the spiritual intensity of a Tibetan tantric choir. Everything about their sound—a colossal yet minimal configuration of throbbing bass, rolling drums and chanted vocals—is optimised for third-eye transformation. Most of their recordings, including 2005's distortion-caked “On the Mountain at Dawn”, lumber like primordial titans, but Om also drift into raga rock outfitted with tambura and busy percussion (“Cremation Ghat I”) and psychedelic mantras cloaked in the spacy mysteriousness heard on early Pink Floyd records (“Pilgrimage”).
