The name of this Canadian duo doubles as their mission statement: As Neon Dreams, singer Frank Kadillac and drummer Adrian Morris fuse the sounds of their youth—pop-punk, hip-hop and EDM among them—into nostalgic, pleasure-seeking bops. Their 2019 single “High School Dropout” exemplifies their hyper-referential approach, with knowing lyrical nods to Michael Jackson, Outkast, Foster the People and Kendrick Lamar set to a Daft Punk disco bounce. But Neon Dreams are also unafraid to dredge less fond memories of the past, as Kadillac recounts the racist violence he endured as a teen on the sombre acoustic serenade “We Were Kings”.
