Had Salvador Dalí started a heavy-metal band, it probably would’ve sounded a lot like Mr. Bungle. Featuring Faith No More’s perpetually bizarre Mike Patton on vocals, the band create an assaultive brand of loudness that’s just as contorted and disorienting as the surrealist painter’s shapeshifting canvases. Thrash metal is capable of melting into avant-garde noise, which in turn can explode into nearly anything: free jazz, a showtune, even funk. While it’s true Mr. Bungle haven’t recorded all that much, what’s out there is wildly influential. Their 1991 debut in particular is one of the cornerstones of both alt-metal and experimental rock.
