Miiesha Essentials

An Aṉangu/Torres Strait Islander woman from the rural Queensland town of Woorabinda, Miiesha Young has dedicated much of her songbook to ongoing stories of community and survival. Debuting with 2019’s “Black Privilege”, she sang intimately about resilience over R&B-influenced beats and harmonies. Those themes continued across her 2020 album, Nyaaringu, which featured spoken interludes from her late grandmother and won the ARIA Award for Best Soul/R&B Release. Young’s range as a vocalist is just as stirring as her subject matter. Her gospel influence shines on 2020’s “Neon Moon”, featuring The Woorabinda Singers, while she has supplied flowing hooks to hip-hop tracks for First Nation artists Dallas Woods and Ziggy Ramo. Another unexpected pivot, 2022’s stunning “Eventually” explores romantic longing with torchy tenderness.
