Mica Levi’s arresting arrangements never—ever—go where you expect. The Surrey-born composer, producer and singer/songwriter (also known as Micachu) can lure you in with soft, sensual strings that slink and slither with abandon, before they quickly paralyse you with dissonant—often disorienting—drones, scratches and buzzes. This balance between the titillating and terrifying makes for fascinating film music, as Levi combines their classical training with a restless experimental vision, bringing an otherworldly eeriness to 2014’s Under the Skin and devastating beauty to the Oscar-nominated score for 2016’s Jackie.
