Mary Lou Williams made her name as an arranger and pianist for Andy Kirk, but during her five-decade career she was a tireless creative force. She provided accompaniment for singer Mildred Bailey on “Prisoner of Love”, and unlike many swing-era figures, she adapted to the times, serving up soul jazz on “Credo” in the mid-'60s. A decade later, she rode a deep bluesy groove with “Play it Momma”, adapting her spirituality for a modern generation.
