

She may be the daughter of Elis Regina, arguably Brazil's most influential MPB star, but Maria Rita has nevertheless created a unique musical persona. Like a Brazilian Norah Jones, Rita has a clear, technically impeccable voice that still delivers emotion by the ton. Frequent accompanist Tiago Costa facilitates the tinge of jazz improvisation that flavours her music. When Rita finally released an album of material associated with her mother—2012's Redescobrir—her smoldering, teasing and vulnerable voice sounded right at home.
