Colombia’s Manuel Turizo was born into a musical family yet originally wanted to be a vet; fortunately for reggaetón, he discovered his singing skills and pivoted to music. With his husky, honeyed voice, Turizo stands out: He’s never in a rush, and that gravitas makes him an ideal collaborator—and not just within urbano. He’s a savvy cross-pollinator, working with artists including prefab boy band CNCO, Mexican pop-rockers Reik and vallenato/pop elder statesman Carlos Vives. On the increasingly rare occasions when he’s solo, as on the 2018 single “Culpables”, the spare production allows his uniquely textured voice to shine.
