Mahalia Barnes Essentials

Named after gospel powerhouse Mahalia Jackson, the daughter of pub-rock bullroarer Jimmy Barnes wasn't likely to grow up whispering. She sang on her old man's 1990 album Two Fires at the age of nine, and cut a few singles with her siblings' novelty band the Tin Lids soon after. But soul was clearly her calling as an adult, as amply illustrated by the classic selections on Volume 1 and Ooh Yeah! The Betty Davis Songbook, each with her band the Soul Mates. A reliable back-up and session singer for Jade McCrae, Diesel and more, she paired with fellow The Voice contestant Prinnie Stevens for the 2012 collection, Come Together.
