Kwaito Essentials

Kwaito Essentials

The dance music phenomenon of kwaito started making waves in South Africa in the early '90s, during the final years of apartheid. These playful, midtempo house jams created for and by the local youth became a vital form of self-expression. Kwaito takes cues from hip-hop and R&B with rhythmic rap and invokes a unique, engaging style of spoken diologue. The more uptempo UK garage and house beats are an inspiration as well, with kick drums, euphoric vocals and kinetic percussion that may not be inherently political, but are certainly designed to pack the dance floor.
