Koffee Essentials

Reggae singer and guitarist Koffee found popularity in the late 2010s as an impassioned and fearless vocal stylist and lyricist with a charming, runaway success story. Born in 2000 in Spanish Town, Jamaica, she saw her career blossom out of a viral moment upon posting a self-composed tribute song to sprinter Usain Bolt on social media. Her profile rose in the reggae and pop spheres, and she was signed to Columbia in 2018. Her politically conscious, motormouth track “Raggamuffin” preceded the release of her acclaimed Rapture EP, on which Koffee sounded musically sophisticated and lyrically wise beyond her 18 years. The project’s R&B-inflected Major Lazer collaboration “Toast” showed the singer’s ability to reach beyond traditional reggae, finding crossover appeal in the U.S. Her pandemic-era debut LP, Gifted, featuring the of-its-time single “Lockdown”, reflected an artist doubling down on pushing herself musically and into new, emotionally nuanced lyrical modes.
