Shifting between moods and modes with breezy nonchalance, Kita Alexander sounds right at home against a wide spectrum of pop. The Australian singer-songwriter’s 2015 debut single “My Own Way” questioned the possibility of personal freedom in a theoretical relationship against a chirpy electronic sheen, while the same year’s “Like You Want To” dipped into slinky soft rock. Since then she has pulled off some unlikely collabs, magnifying the gossamer uplift of her voice on FISHER’s 2023 EDM reverie “Atmosphere” and then coming down to Earth on the same year’s dusky duet with country singer Morgan Evans on “Date Night”. Alexander has regularly addressed the challenges and triumphs of her personal life in her songs too, grieving her lost sister on 2017’s “Hotel” and other lingering traumas elsewhere. By the time of her 2024 debut album, Young in Love, her accumulated experience as a songwriter led to her most confident work to date: Witness the casual empowerment of “Zodiac”, on which Alexander cuts loose a problematic ex and celebrates the joy of being self-sufficient.
