King Krule Essentials

Archy Marshall is a scuffed presence in his own music. The spiritual heir to Ian Dury and Chet Baker, he started out making woozy tracks full of jazzy guitar and dubby production for the internet in the early 2010s. To prevent anyone getting too comfortable, he called himself Zoo Kid first, then King Krule for his first singles and album—a name adapted from a character in Donkey Kong—and even a brief spell under his real name. Marshall writes dark and poetic electronic music, sanded raw with metropolitan grit and sung in a deep throaty mumble that occasionally becomes a sardonic roar.
