Kabza De Small Essentials

Amapiano pioneer Kabza De Small is one of the genre’s most prolific producers, and developed an outsized influence on South African music in a relatively short time. Earlier efforts such as 2018’s “Amabele Shaya” and “Remix” from his 2019 sophomore album Pretty Girls Love Amapiano showed promise as Kabza De Small consolidated his influences of kwaito, Afro-house and jazz. Songs like “Sponono” (assisted by Burna Boy, Cassper Nyovest, Wizkid and Madumane) and “Ndofaya” (a cross between kwaito and vintage house), from his 2020 album I Am the King of Amapiano: Sweet & Dust, showcase his range and dexterity as a producer. Now a titan in South African music, both as a solo act and as one half of the super duo Scorpion Kings alongside DJ Maphorisa, Kabza De Small has impacted the SA music scene with his magic touch by shaping the careers of a number of artists: from Samthing Soweto’s “Akulaleki”, produced by Scorpion Kings, to Young Stunna’s breakout hit “Adiwele”, the ’90s-kwaito-recalling “Uzozisola” from Mas Musiq’s album Auti 'eSharp and “eMcimbini”, the mammoth lockdown hit featuring Aymos and Samthing Soweto.
