Producer Hudson Mohawke's musical vision presses hip-hop, electronic music and warped old funk and soul records together into unlikely shapes, infusing the cold cerebral purity of one with the brassy warmth and sonic liveliness of the others. This open-eared and playful approach makes him a natural collaborator, not just for the sonic explorations of his TNGHT side project with Lunice, but for questing rappers such as Kanye West, with whom he made the startlingly tense “I Am a God”, and Drake, whose “Connect” simmers in a resentful slouch of down-tuned instruments.
